Entrepreneur James Dondero, the president and co-founder of the Dallas-based Highland Capital Management puts a greater than usual emphasis on his company providing support to its local community though philanthropical pursuits. One such initiative is Education if Freedom, a program that provides at-risk youth with money that is needed to pursue a degree in higher education. The organization also provides these students with training in professional development, preparations for standardized testing, mentor programs, and the opportunity to intern at many of the most well-respected business organizations and non-profits in the city of Dallas.
EIF began its mission as a scholarship fund and provided first-time college students with renewable scholarships. Leaders of the non-profit realized before long that many at-risk students would need much more support to eliminate the barriers that stood between themselves and a quality education. This led to EIF developing a comprehensive program that operates alongside the Dallas Independent School District.

James Dondero and Highland Capital have for years sponsored an annual job fair Mayor’s Intern Program and EIF provides helps to prepare the students in the weeks leading up to the job fair by providing them with tips and instructions pertaining to the process involving job applications and interviews.
