Here’s How Vinod Gupta Became Successful


India is one of the poorest nations on planet Earth. Many Indians emigrate to the United States in hopes of living better lives. First-generation immigrants who live in the United States are much more likely to start businesses than their domestic-born counterparts – that’s exactly what Vin Gupta did.

Who is Vinod Gupta and what is he known for?

In 2010, Mr. Vin Gupta sold the ownership rights to InfoFree, a cloud-based business service provider, for a whopping $680 million. The company was originally founded in the early 1970s as Business Research Services & American Business Lists.

Vinod Gupta is also a philanthropist who is known around India, his home country, for helping grow Ram Rati Gupta Polytechnic, an all-female school dedicated to giving access to “Women’s Education” and allow them to  earn post graduate degrees at an accelerated pace. Ram Rati Gupta Polytechnic is located in Gupta’s hometown of Rampur Maniharan, Uttar Pradesh, one of the poorest places in India.

Mr. Gupta has also given back to IIT Kharagpur’s Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law. He attended IIT Kharagpur before moving to the United States in the late 1960s.

The background of Mr. Vinod Gupta

Born in India in 1946, Gupta enrolled in the Indian Air Force as one of its Engineering Unit’s Flying Officers as soon as he turned 18. He retired after spending three years with the Indian Air Force as Squadron Leader.

He moved to the United States with just $58 in cash and a suitcase of well-worn clothes. Mr. Gupta followed Bill Spinter, a visiting professor at IIT Kharagpur that Vinod studied under while at IIT Kharagpur, to the University of Nebraska. There, he earned a bachelor’s degree. Gupta pursued a master’s degree in business administration at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, a satellite campus in the University of Nebraska system, and graduated in 1971.
