Mr. Soros was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1930, and emigrated to Britain in 1947. He earned both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in philosophy from the London School of Economics. He started his career working for various banks in the United States and England. He managed his first hedge fund firm, Double Eagle, later renamed Quantum fund in the United States in 1969. At this time, the firm was worth 12 million dollars. He invested the profits made from this hedge fund into his hedge fund company, Soros Fund Management. George is the master of shorting and swapping stocks within a hedge fund. As an astute student of philosophy, he has been able to apply Karl Poppers General Theory of Reflexivity to capital markets. The theory of reflexivity is a circular relationship between cause and effect. In economics, this is a self-reinforcing effect of the sentiment of the market. An example of this is when rising prices of stocks attract buyers and their actions drive the stock prices higher. It is a positive reinforcement loop.
